Using Ruby on Rails to Make a Massive Multiplayer Game

The rapid development capabilities combined with built in Ajax technologies make Ruby on Rails a ripe platform for building immersive and highly entertaining massive multiplayer online games.

We'll discuss the idea of the game llor.nu, a game with over 4000 active players, then break down the structure, and the approach taken when developing the game. We'll discuss ways to optimize ActiveRecord related code, talk about caching techniques, and talk about quick ways to prepare yourself for rapid growth similar to the growth that llor.nu has seen.

Finally, we'll talk about releasing the game as a full open source software project and talk about the challenges and advantages that becoming "transparent" can bring, and why open source might help your application.
